Introduction
An Englishwoman
in Saudi Arabia
This book
tells how I, the writer, a middle-aged widow, an actor, singer and dancer,
a teacher of English as a Foreign Language and also of Yoga, was engaged,
in the best The King and I tradition, as a Governess by part of the
Saudi Arabian Royal Family. It goes on to tell how I became immersed
in the Arab lifestyle, with no expatriate company of any sort, and how
I carried out my task in the complete absence of guidelines, living
in a heavily guarded marble Palace in the Saudi Arabian desert.
After describing
the initial shock of my encounter with an alien society, I share my
personal journey of discovery as I went through a cultural, social and
religious re-education, in a sustained effort to adapt and integrate
successfully.
The book
evolved out of curiosity and respect. Interwoven into the story is my
insight into modern - and privileged - Saudi life. Primarily my own
story, the book also explores my impressions of Islam and the Qur'an;
Muslim beliefs, customs, traditions and morality; hospitality and leisure;
Saudi and Bedouin cuisine, dress, the family, modern women, marriage
and divorce.
