CHEPSTOW

Coach and Horses, Welsh Street
Tel: 01291-622626
Good traditional pub with a split-level interior, serving real ales. Summer beer festival coincides with Chepstow Festival. Near to racecourse and castle.

Boat Inn, The Back
Tel: 01291-628192
Atmospheric and popular riverside pub with excellent views of the Wye. Excellent food served throughout the week, including Sundays.

CHEPSTOW TO MONMOUTH

Boat Inn, Lone Lane, Penalt
Tel: 01600-712615
On side of River Wye, lovely dark old pub, serving real ales and home-made food. Wonderful atmosphere. Worth crossing the river for.

MONMOUTH

Green Dragon Inn, St. Thomas's Square
Tel: 01600-712561
Just beyond medieval Monmow Bridge, a comfortable pub that appeals to gentlemen of a certain temperament. Jazz on Wednesdays.

King's Head, Agincourt Square
Tel: 01600-713417
One of the town's former coaching hotels is now owned by Wetherspoons, who provide a range of good real ales and cheap food. Typical Wetherspoons but well done for all that.

MONMOUTH TO HAY-ON-WYE

Hunter's Moon Inn, Llangattock Lingoed
Tel: 01873-821499
Now the only pub on the Offa's Dyke Path between Monmouth and Pandy. Check for opening times.

Skirrid Inn, Hereford Road, Llanfihangel Crucorney
Tel: 01873-890258
Oldest pub in Wales and second oldest in the UK. The beer's nothing to write home about but the atmosphere is.

Lancaster Arms, Old Hereford Road, Pandy
Tel: 01873-890699
Welcoming, if slightly bizarre, pub. Unusual beers and pub grub. Worth going just to meet the landlord.

HAY-ON-WYE

Old Black Lion, Lion Street
Tel: 01497-820841
Probably the best place to eat in Hay-on-Wye. First-class menu and a lovely dining room, though you'll probably need to book.

Three Tuns, 4 Broad Street
No phone
A unique pub with a unique landlady. You won't get any ice-cold lagers in here but you simply have to visit, before it's too late. Lucy's not getting any younger.

HAY-ON-WYE TO KINGTON

Royal Oak Inn, Gladestry
Tel: 01544-370669
Pleasant pub just below Hergest Ridge, serving real ales and good food. A good refuelling stop before you have to cope with Mike Oldfield's music - or after you have done.

KINGTON

Olde Tavern, 22 Victoria Road
Tel: 01544-231384
If you can find it, it's allegedly Kington's link with the past, with two bars adorned with curios designed as a typical 19th century pub.

KNIGHTON

Horse and Jockey, Wylcym Place
Tel: 01547-520909
The interior décor suggests a youth-oriented clientele at certain times but not, I suspect, during the main part of the day. Handy because it's open all day.

George and Dragon, Broad Street
Tel: 01547-528532
Pleasant, old-fashioned sort of pub in the heart of the town. Serves good pub grub all week, including Sundays.

MONTGOMERY

Green Dragon, Montgomery
Tel: 1686-668359
Old 16th century coaching house, featuring beams allegedly nicked from Montgomery Castle. Excellent food and real ales. Swimming pool and sauna too, though you have to be a paying guest.

MONTGOMERY TO OSWESTRY

Powis Arms, Pool Quay
Tel: 01938-590253
Very special atmosphere - like being in your own home but with several beer pulls available. Liverpool in Wales.

Golden Lion Hotel, Four Crosses. Llanymynech
Tel: 01691-830295
Wonderfully-friendly pub, serving good food and real ales. Landlord and landlady are real characters.

Efel Inn, Trefonen
Tel: 01691-659840
Whatever you do, don't ask "Is efel in?" because they've heard it a thousand times. Just order an excellent sandwich and a cool pint.

OSWESTRY

Railway Inn, Beatrice Road
Tel: 1691-653489
Nothing special really, except that it serves good real ales.

OSWESTRY TO LLANGOLLEN

Aqueduct Inn, Holyhead Road, Froncysyllte
Tel: 01691-772481
Where I should have gone rather than the Trevor Inn. Excellent views of the aqueduct and good beers.

LLANGOLLEN

Sun Inn, 49 Regent Street
Tel: 01978-860233
Real-ale lovers' paradise, plus a range of unusual foreign beers. Excellent juke box, plus folk music on Wednesdays and live bands at other times.

LLANGOLLEN TO RUTHIN

The Crown Inn, Ruthin Road, Llandegla
Tel: 01978-790228
Very pleasant pub that breaks the journey between Llangollen and Ruthin and serves the wonderful John Willie's ales.

RUTHIN TO PRESTATYN

Downing Arms, Mold Road, Bodfari
Tel: 01745-710265
Pleasant country pub serving decent food and beer.

PRESTATYN

Offa's Tavern, 2-10 High Street
Tel: 01745 886046
Well, you have to go really, don't you? Though there's nothing specially to recommend it other than its name. And, to tell the truth, the best thing you can do in Prestatyn is get out of it.
